I have known Jane Markley for several years in her role as a healthcare professional and ethicist. I was so impressed with her knowledge and practical sensibilities related to health policy that I asked Jane to serve as a healthcare ethics consultant to our national nonprofit organization, Aging with Dignity. In that capacity, Jane keeps us apprised of changes related to advance care planning policy and practice. On several occasions, Jane and I have co-presented professional workshops also related to advance care planning. Jane has a unique blend of skills that are the ingredients for her successful work as a consultant. She has practical experience as a nurse in the clinical setting, which gives her an understanding of how theory plays out in the real world. Her work on hospital ethics committees provides perspective on how some of the most challenging issues are debated and resolved. In addition, her awareness of policy and trends related to advance care planning make her counsel invaluable. Although she begins any project with a wide array of knowledge, I have been most impressed by Jane’s ability to locate any information necessary. She is never intimidated by the unknown, and always eager to find practical solutions to real challenges in healthcare. I have great respect for Jane and the quality of her work.
